Gaining Perspective

Insignificant... Yet Prized by Majesty!

As I explained in yesterday's blog, 50 years ago yesterday, a small group of intrepid adventurers strapped themselves into a 6.5 million pound, three stage Saturn V rocket and were hurtled into space.

50 years ago today, those same adventurers were on the most epic (to date) space journey of human history. What was it like? The astronauts are the best eye-witnesses to answer that question. And of them all, I think Neil Armstrong is my personal favorite. I love his quotes, his insights, his humility, and most of all, I love the way he glorified the Creator in it all. So what insights or perspectives did Neil Armstrong gain from this epic journey?

During this trip, the astronauts were able to not only view the Moon in increasingly close proximity, they were also able to view Earth as it receded into the distance. At one point, Neil looked out the window of his spacecraft and saw an unforgettable view of Earth, which he described as follows:

"It suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the Earth. I put up my thumb and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet Earth. (But) I didn't feel like a giant. I felt very, very small." - Neil Armstrong

All of our lives and loves and experiences are lived out on a tiny speck which we call Earth, located in the vastness of God's Creation! 

How easy would it have been for God to simply blot out the Earth with His great Thumb, after mankind Fell? In so doing, sin would have quickly been eradicated from His Universe! Yet, God did not. 

Instead of blotting us out and moving on, Yahweh opted to manifest in the Flesh and pay in Blood for the redemption of fallen mankind! It boggles the mind to consider our size...  our insignificance...  and yet, to see that we were prized by Majesty! How great a Price was paid for our redemption? There are no words!
