Delta Aquariid Meteors Peak

This week the Delta Aquariid Meteor shower will reach its nominal peak. The official peak will be in the pre-dawn hours of tomorrow morning. The following graphic shows the epicenter of the shower and a few visual reference points.

Whether or not you will want to get up early to try to view the shower is up to you. Many astronomers think that it might be better to wait until the new moon, even though tomorrow morning is the official peak, since this shower is fairly faint and one can expect long waits between sighting meteors. On the conjunction of the moon (August 1), the sky will be dark. And since this meteor shower is a sky event that stretches into early August, it is a good idea to wait for the conjunction. It is estimated that you may see as many as 10-15 meteors per hour in the dark sky.

The Delta Aquariid shower is viewed best in the Southern Hemisphere, although it is visible from the mid-northern latitudes. This meteor shower, which continues into August overlaps the Perseids Meteor shower (the Perseids peak around August 11-13). 

The Delta Aquariid Meteor shower is an annual event. This shower is caused by Earth passing through the debris left behind by a comet, as is shown in the following graphic.
