In the Northern Hemisphere, January is a great month for viewing Re'eym (now called Taurus, the Bull). The two deep-sky objects of Pleiades and Hyades shine brightly this month. The Pleiades, also known as the Seven Sisters and M45, looks like a small dipper. And the larger Hyades forms the V-shaped head of Re'eym. These parts of the bull will appear highest in the south in the early evening. Pleiades is a starry warning of the seven last plagues which will soon be coming upon the unrepentant of this world. And Re'eym itself is the constellation associated with the Second Coming of Messiah.

As I have shared in yesterday's blog, Betelgeuse is dimming. Today, I will show you some dramatic changes in the star Al Gol. Al Gol - the Goliath star (a term which I will more fully explain in a minute) is a variable star in the constellation Perseus, called Parats in Hebrew. Tonight, if you start viewing Al Gol soon after darkness falls, you will be able to watch it more than triple in brightness (from a starting magnitude of 3.4 to a magnitude of 2.1) over the course of about five hours. Al Gol appears nearly overhead after sunset. It sinks low in the northwest well after midnight. So why is Al Gol the Goliath star? Let me explain this star name and its meaning in the placement it has in its constellation.
Parats (Perseus) is one of the largest constellations in the Northern Hemisphere. It is well-known for its annual meteor shower which takes place from July 23 to August 13. Certainly, this meteor shower highlights the Heavenly Father's Message in Parats.
When David fought the giant Goliath (Golyath), he slew him by striking the giant with a stone in the forehead. David then used Goliath's own sword and cut off his head. The constellation of Parats has immortalized this Bible story, shining it out nightly in this constellation. But David and Goliath were only a shadow picture of the deeper message of Parats. Golyath—the name of this star—is also the Hebrew name of the giant we call “Goliath” in the Bible. Like the heroic Parats in this constellation, David slew the giant Goliath (Golyath) by striking him in the forehead with a stone from his sling. In other words, David killed Goliath by hitting him in the forehead, in the location of the star Golyath. In this constellation, the giant enemy’s head has been severed and is being held up as a trophy of victory in the hands of Parats. Christ is represented in Parats and Satan is the slain giant whose severed head is in the hands of the Heavenly Judge. This star-picture is showing that our mighty Messiah will conquer Satan in the end.
Suggesting the devil’s impending doom, two comets passed through Ha Satan, conjuncting with the star Al Gol(Golyath). The paths of the two comets visually formed “cross-hairs” through Al Gol. In 1996, the Hyakutake comet passed through the head of Ha Satan, conjuncting Al Gol as shown with the yellow, dotted line running from left to right. This comet is on a 20,000 year+ circuit. One solar year later (to the day), the comet Hale Bopp passed through Al Gol, as shown with the other yellow, dotted line. The Greeks said the severed head held in the hand of Parats (whom they called Perseus) belonged to Medusa (a demonic “goddess” with serpents for hair). Considering that the true identity of the defeated giant is actually the serpent from Eden—the devil himself—the Greeks weren’t too far off. But we may know that the severed head belongs to the devil because the Hebrew name of the severed head is Ha Satan (Satan), and the Arabic name was Al Ghoul (the evil spirit).

In the Northern Hemisphere, if you go out to look at the sky after dark tonight, Orion will be shining brightly in the southeast. But, if you've been watching Orion for the past several years, you may notice that it doesn't quite look the same... Beginning in October of 2019, about the time of Sukkot, astronomers noticed that the brightness of Betelgeuse had suddenly begun to change. Formerly one of the top 10 brightest stars in the sky, the brightness of Betelgeuse had fallen to 21st place by the end of December, 2019! Betelgeuse is the brightest star in Orion. It's Hebrew name is Bo Tsemach, meaning "the Coming Branch". Since "the Branch" is a Scriptural and Heavenly title of our Saviour, we see the promise of the King's Return in this amazing star.
Betelgeuse is located in the right shoulder of Orion. See the photo of Orion below (Betelgeuse is the orange star on the upper left hand side of the image. (Since Orion is facing us, his right shoulder is on our left.)
Betelgeuse is one of the largest known stars. It is 700 times the size of our Sun. In fact, if our Sun were as massive as Betelgeuse, it's surface would extend all the way out to the orbit of Jupiter!
In spite of its massive size, Betelgeuse has a cooler surface temperature than our Sun. The low surface temperature (6000 F compared to our Sun's 10,000 F) of Betelgeuse causes it to appear orange-red in color.
Betelgeuse:Hebrew name: Bo Tsemach (Strong's Concordance numbers H935 and H6780), means "Branch who comes" or "coming" "Branch", which is a reference to Yahshua's Return:
Jeremiah 23:5 "Behold, the days come, saith Yahweh, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth."
As Betelgeuse is part of the Orion constellation, understanding the spiritual meaning of this star involves understanding the Creator's Message in Orion (Kesiyl) as a whole. For a deeper understanding, revisit my blog posting on Orion. You may also find information about theOrionconstellation in my book, God's Amazing Star Secret).
So what is causing Betelgeuse to dim? Scientists are scrambling to figure it out. It could be that Betelgeuse is merely dimming because it has long been known to be a variable star. Perhaps it has dimmed and will reclaim its former glory as time goes on. Some astronomers believe that Betelgeuse's dimness is a sign that it is dying out and that we will soon see it go supernova.
If it indeed it does "go" supernova, it will be a notable heavenly sign, but it will not effect the Earth today. This is because the light from Betelgeuse takes 642 years to reach the Earth. Thus, if we view the supernova tomorrow, it actually took place 642 years ago. But, of course, the heavens are God's great Clock. And He is well-able to plan and put a heavenly sign in motion 642 years before it is needed! The heavenly sign of dimming Betelgeuse - Bo Tsemach - is a Messianic sign. As we have seen, the Hebrew name for this star (Bo Tsemach) means that the Branch is coming. The Branch is Messiah. But the world is preparing to receive a false Messiah, rejecting Christ the true Messiah. Soon the false Messiah, known as the Anti-Christ, will reign from what should be God's Temple in Jerusalem. As we come closer to the arrival and reign of the false Messiah, the light of the star representing the true Messiah is dimming! Perhaps it will even disappear entirely from view in a spectacular supernova! And in the dimming, we find a warning for all who will look up and see. The Light of Truth about the true Messiah is being eclipsed... Let's make sure that the Light of the true Bo Tsemach is shining brightly in our hearts, even as it becomes dimmed upon this Earth.

Upcoming Sky Events for January 2020... In the month of January, we have several special sky events, as follows:
January 3-4 - Quadrantids Meteor Shower - The annual Quadrantid Shower is above average with up to 40 meteors per hour at its peak. For more information on this amazing shower, click here to view last year's blog on it.
January 10 - Full Moon/Penumbral Lunar Eclipse - When the moon passes through the Earth's partial shadow (known as its penumbra) a Penumbral Lunar Eclipse occurs. During this kind of an eclipse, the Moon only darkens slightly, but not completely. This eclipse will be visible throughout most of Europe, Africa, Asia, the Indian Ocean, and Western Australia. January 24 - Astronomical New Moon - The day which is now known as the New Moon among astronomers is the day when the moon is dark - being in its conjunctive phase. The dark phase of the Moon is not the Biblical New Moon, which was counted from the sighting of the first visible sliver, following the conjunction. January 25 - Biblical New Moon Eve - The first visible sliver of the New Moon will be sightable this evening at sunset (weather permitting). The first visible sliver of the New Moon chases the sun down as it sets. This evening, at sunset is the start of the Biblical New Moon Day, which is January 26, 2020 - having begun at sunset on January 25.
And that is an overview of some of the sky highlights for this month...
