Messier 35

Use the Moon as Your Guide

When you're less familiar with the constellations, it can be hard to find things. But, in the next few days, we will get a great opportunity for finding a few of the harder to spot sights, because we'll have a heavenly guide - the Moon!

Tonight, the bright gibbous Moon will pass through the foot of the Heavenly Bridegroom in Ta'am (Gemini). Not only will this placement help you sight Ta'am, but also, the Moon will be positioned in such a way as to be surrounded by many spectacular deep sky objects, one of which is Messier 35.

To use the Moon to find Messier 35, note that when the Moon is passing through the foot of Ta'am, it will be 1.5 degrees below Messier 35. For visual reference, that means Messier 35 will be just less than three Moon diameters above the Moon. Once you know where to look for Messier 35, wait...  Come back to find it on a night when the Moon is not nearby. Using binoculars will help also.
