An Overview of October

Upcoming Sky Events for October 2019...

In the month of October, our special star-family will be Ta'am (Gemini) and its decans. The month of October has seven must-see sky events, which I will discuss in more detail on the day they occur. But here's a heads-up on what you can expect to see in the month of October:

October 3 - Venus (Nogah) will Conjunction Spica (star in the FirstFruits grain in Bethulah's Hand)

On the evening of Thursday, October 3, Venus's orbital path will carry it to less than three degrees above Virgo's (Bethulah's) brightest star - Spica. You should be able to sight the two in the western sky just after sunset.

October 3 - Unusual Daytime View of Jupiter (Tsedek)

Also, on Thursday, October 3, the moon will be located one degree above Jupiter (Tsedek). This conjunction will allow viewers to sight Jupiter in the daytime. Use the moon to help you find it. Jupiter will be located directly below the moon (which will also be viewable in the daytime) at mid-afternoon.

October 5 - Rare View of the Lunar X

On October 5, the rims of the lunar craters Purbach, la Caille, and Blanchinus will be illuminated forming a small, but very obvious X-shape on the surface of the moon. Look for the X about 1/3 of the way up from the southern pole of the moon). It probably doesn't have any spiritual significance, but sighting the Lunar X is a fun thing to do - and not very many people have done so.

October 13 - Smallest Full Moon of the Year

This full moon - the October full moon - which is traditionally called the Hunter's Moon rises at sunset and sets on sunrise. It will be the smallest full moon (visually) of 2019.

October 21-22 - Orionids Meteor Shower Peaks
Throughout the seventh biblical month (appropriately - since Orion is the Second Coming constellation) the annual Orionids meteor shower has been carrying on. Composed of debris from Halley's Comet, this meteor produces 10-20 fast meteors per hour (at its peak). It peaks on the Last Great Day (October 21) and on the night of October 22.

And that is an overview of some of the sky highlights for this month...
