Upcoming Sky Events for September 2019...
In the month of September, our special star-family will be Re'eym (Taurus) and its decans. The month of September has several significant sky events, which I will discuss in more detail on the days they occur. But here's a heads-up on what you can expect to see in the month of September:
September 9 - Neptune at Opposition

The planet now called Neptune is not one of the original seven planets known by the ancients in our Solar System. In fact, Neptune is so far away from Earth that it cannot be seen with the naked eye, nor even with lesser telescopes. As a result, Neptune does not have an ancient, Biblical name. However, in 2009, the planet Neptune was finally given the Hebrew name Rahab.
Yes, Neptune is far away, but on September 9, it will be at its closest approach to Earth, with its face fully illuminated by the Sun. This means that the planet will be brighter than any other time of the year. However, because of its extreme distance, even on this night where it is the closest, Neptune will still only appear as a tiny blue dot in all but the most powerful of telescopes.

September 23 - Autumnal Equinox
The Fall (in the Northern Hemisphere) Equinox is September 23. In Hebrew, Equinoxes and Solstices are called Tekufot. The four Tekufot are the days on which day and night are equal in length (spring and fall equinoxes) and the longest (summer solstice) and shortest (winter solstice) days of the year. The Autumnal Equinox does mark the start of Fall on a modern calendar, but it is not the day on which day and night are equal at the point of the calendar's origin.
September 29 - New Moon Eve
The first visible crescent of the new moon should appear at sunset. Watch for the crescent moon which will follow the sun going down as it sets. The new moon will not be visible very long following the sunset. The biblical day of the New Moon always follows the New Moon Eve. So the New Moon day, being the seventh New Moon of our current Biblical year, will be September 30. By the way, the seventh New Moon is a biblical Feast - The Feast of Trumpets (Yom Terruah)!
