Next Month's Sky Overview

Upcoming Sky Events for April 2019...

In the month of April, our special star-family will be Sagittarius (Qesheth) and its decans. The month of April has several sky events, which I will discuss in more detail on the day they occur. But here's a heads-up on what you can expect to see in the month of April:

April 6 - New Moon Eve

The first visible crescent of the new moon should appear at sunset. Watch for the crescent moon which will follow the sun going down as it sets. The new moon will not be visible very long following the sunset. April 7 (the day following the sighting of the first visible sliver) will be the first new moon of the Biblical year, from which one counts to Passover (the 14th day).

April 11 - Mercury at its Greatest Western Elongation

In the early morning hours of April 11, Mercury (Kokah in Hebrew) will be at its highest point above the eastern horizon. This certainly makes it the perfect time to go out and sight the elusive "wandering star" (as planets were anciently called). More about this coming on the 11th...

April 22 - Lyrids Meteor Shower

While it isn't going to be a meteor "storm", the annual Lyrids Meteor Shower usually produces about 20 meteors per hour. The epicenter of the shower will be located in the constellation of Lyra (Kinnor, in Hebrew), which appropriately happens to be one of the decans of Qesheth - our featured constellation for the month of April. The meteor shower will peak the night of April 22 and will end the morning of April 23. A few meteors will even be visible in the nights leading up to and after these dates.

Notably, this meteor shower will occur during the Spring Feast of Unleavened Bread (which begins April 21 and concludes on April 27, this year... more on all of this on the day(s) of the event...
