Sky Events in January 2019

2019 will be a big year for sky-events. Throughout this year, in this blog I will announce these sky-events as they come and show the Biblical significance of them through their placement in the constellations, the original names and meanings of the heavenly bodies in the sky event.

Sky events which take place on the Creator's holy days (Leviticus 23) are especially significant in terms of the importance of the heavenly message signified by the celestial event. Thus, sky events which fall on these days will be given special focus and detail. The Heavenly Father's holy days include:

  • Seventh-day Sabbaths (Exodus 20:8-11)
  • New Moons (which were the counted from the first visible sliver in Bible times, not the conjunction - a detail which will be addressed thoroughly later on in January in this blog) (Isaiah 66:23)
  • Annual Sabbaths and Sacred Feast Days (Leviticus 23
The following is a list of the sky events for January 2019. This list is provided merely as a "heads-up" and is not intended to provide detail into the events or their spiritual significance. Those details will be provided just prior to or on the day of the event, in this blog throughout the month.

In the following list, celestial events which occur on the Creator's holy days (listed above) are highlighted in blue.

SKY EVENTS:
January, 2019

January 3 - Quadrantids Meteor Shower

The Quadrantids is an above average meteor show showing as many as 40 meteors per hour at its peak. Look for details on this meteor shower in this blog on January 3, 2019

January 6 - Conjunction & Venus (Nogah) Elongation

The planet Venus (ancient Hebrew name Nogah) will reach its greatest eastern elongation on this day. It will be 47 degrees from the sun. Because it will be at its highest point above the horizon in the early morning sky, this is the best time to view Venus. Look for the bright planet in the eastern sky just before sunrise.

January 6 - Partial Solar Eclipse

There will be a partial solar eclipse, which will be visible in parts of eastern Asia and the northern Pacific Ocean. The best place to view it will be from Russia, which should expect 62% coverage. For a viewing map, click here.

January 7 - New Moon Eve

The first visible crescent of the new moon should appear at sunset. Watch for the crescent moon which will follow the sun going down as it sets. The new moon will not be visible very long following the sunset. January 8 is the 10th new moon of the Biblical year (since the Biblical year begins in the spring).

January 21 - Super Blood Moon

A super moon is larger than a normal full moon. This event occurs when the moon is at its closest approach to the earth. The unusual closeness of the moon to earth makes the full moon appear slightly larger than normal. Tonight's super moon will be extra special as it will also be a total lunar eclipse, which is known in the Bible as a blood moon (Joel 2:30-31). This is a rare sky-event. This lunar eclipse will be visible throughout most of North America, South America, the eastern Pacific Ocean, western Atlantic Ocean, the extreme western Europe and extreme western Africa. For a viewing map, click here.

January 22 - Conjunction of Venus and Jupiter

The two bright planets of Venus (anciently called Nogah) and Jupiter (anciently called Tsedek) will be visible with 2.4 degrees of each other in the early morning sky. Look for this impressive sight in the east just before sunrise.
