God Created the Heavenly Lights to Determine TIME...

When we look up at the amazing heavenly lights in the sky which Yahweh created, it is easy to be amazed by their majesty and beauty. But we often miss the Creator's Purpose in creating the heavenly lights.

There are five reasons why Yahweh created the heavenly lights, as listed in Genesis 1:14. All five of these reasons are related to TIME.

Genesis 1:14 "And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years."

Here we find that the movements of the heavenly bodies through the sky is God's great Clock. How many aspects of TIME does Yahweh use the heavens to determine? 

1) DIVIDE DAY FROM NIGHT - The heavenly lights divide day from night, determining the length of time for daylight and dark each day.

2) SIGNS - the word "signs" indicates prophetic signs, or signs of prophecies being fulfilled. Prophetic time is marked and announced by the heavens - in other words, Yahweh uses sky events to make His heavenly Clock dong the arrival of a prophetic event.

3) SEASONS - the word "seasons" is translated from the Hebrew word "mo'ed", meaning "appointed times" and "feasts". This word appears as "feasts" in Leviticus 23. In other words, the timing of the annual Sabbaths (which are all listed in Leviticus 23) are determined by the heavenly lights, which as Psalm 104:19 states, are most especially determined by the moon. 

2) DAYS - The length of a day (which includes both day and night, as a 24-hour block of time) is determined by the heavens. 

3) YEARS - The length of a Biblical year is determined by the heavens.

Thus, we see that the heavenly lights are used for calculating ordinary time on both a small (watches of the day/night) and grand scale (year). The heavenly lights were also given for calculating sacred time, announcing both the arrival of prophetically foretold events and determining  the timing of the annual sacred appointments with Yahweh. 

No wonder Paul could write so plainly about the people of Yahweh needing no information from him regarding "times" and "seasons". God's people, were to be completely tuned-in to the Kingdom of Heaven's great Clock. Thus, the "Day" of Yahweh would not come upon God's people as "thief in the night". Only those who walk in spiritual darkness (being unaware of God's Time-Clock) will be surprised at the Time of His Return, having that great Day overtake them as a thief in the night! (1 Thessalonians 5:1-5)

Since the five main reasons why Yahweh created the heavenly lights all have to do with His Clock and Heaven's TIME, it is important for us to go carefully through the elements of Biblical Time to see how they relate to the heavenly lights and to regain a fuller understanding of Yahweh's Time.
