The Basics of Biblical Astronomy

The Basics of Biblical Astronomy

The first concept to understand is that there are twelve primary constellations. These are the constellations which lie upon the ecliptic path, which is the red line in the illustration on the right. As the earth orbits around the sun in the year, the sun visually appears to pass through the primary twelve constellations, which are:
Bethulah (Virgo)—the virgin
Mozanaim (Libra)—the scales
Aqrab (Scorpio)—the scorpion
Qesheth (Sagittarius)—the horseman
Gedi (Capricornus)—the goat/fish
Deli (Aquarius)—the water carrier
Dagim (Pisces)—the two fish
Taleh (Aries)—the lamb
Re’eym (Taurus)—the bull
Ta’am (Gemini)—the bridal couple
Naveh (Cancer)—the sheep fold
Aryeh (Leo)—the lion
Each of the twelve primary constellations (listed above) has three decans, which are supporting constellations that add to the meaning and message of the primary constellation. Twelve primary constellations with three decans each makes forty-eight, which was the total number of ancient constellations.

Claudius Ptolemy, a Roman-era scholar of Egypt, listed these original 48 constellations in his book, Almagest, which is a 2nd-century mathematical and astronomical treatise on the
apparent motions of the stars and planetary paths. The Almagest was first printed in 1515.

Each constellation has a stick figure, which is created by connecting the dots of the highest magnitude—or brightest—stars in that constellation. Each constellation also has an
illustration (a more realistic detailed drawing of the person, animal or object represented in that constellation), which was known in ancient times, as is demonstrated by the realistic portrayal of the Re’eym (Taurus) constellation on the ancient cave wall of Lascaux, which is known as "the Sistine Chapel of Paleolithic Art".

Archaeology dates the constellation paintings on the cave-walls of Lascaux (located in the Vezere River valley in the Dordogne region of southwestern France) to 17,000 years ago (which we who believe in Creation science know is too old, since that would be older than the earth itself). But it is clear that these ancient cave paintings are some of the oldest portrayals of the original constellations on earth. They clearly demonstrate that the ancient people recognized the constellations and identified them to have the same shapes we portray today (in most cases).

Turn your Church or Venue into a Planetarium for a Night (or Weekend)! Now you can share God's Amazing Star Secrets with your whole family, church, or gathering! Request Shauna Manfredine to give her inspiring and well-researched, planetarium-style God's Amazing Star Secrets presentation.

In her presentation(s), Shauna shows the meaning of Psalm 19:1-4 and the original names of the stars based upon earth's first recorded language(s). She shows archaeological evidence of the original constellations and the amazing connection between the 12 tribes of Israel and the 12 primary constellations. And she explains the Plan of Redemption in the original star and constellation names. More information...

  1. Thank you for a clear simple presentation.
It takes a while to begin to understand new concepts.

  2. thank you for sharing, and teaching ELohim's people what has been lost. ELohim told Avraham to "cepher" the stars or chart them out, write them down, and we need to be doing that as well. Problem is most people have no idea where to start. Thank you for teaching ELohim's people what they need to know to watch and help others as well.
