An Overview of May

Upcoming Sky Events for May 2019...

In the month of May, our special star-family will be Capricorn (Gedi) and its decans. The month of May has several sky events, which I will discuss in more detail on the day they occur. But here's a heads-up on what you can expect to see in the month of May:

May 5 - New Moon Eve

The first visible crescent of the new moon should appear at sunset. Watch for the crescent moon which will follow the sun going down as it sets. The new moon will not be visible very long following the sunset. The biblical day of the New Moon always follows the New Moon Eve. So the New Moon day, being the second New Moon of our current Biblical year, will be May 6.

May 6-7 - Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower

The Eta Aquarids meteor shower is an above average shower, often producing up to 50 meteors per hour at its peak. Most of the activity will be seen in the Southern Hemisphere. In the Northern Hemisphere, the rate of meteors can reach about 30 meteors per hour. This year, this annual shower will peak on the night of May 6 and the morning of May 7. The thin crescent moon will set early in the evening leaving dark skies for what should be a good show. Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. The meteors will radiate from the constellation Aquarius (Deli), but can appear anywhere in the sky.

More on all of this on the day(s) of the event... Also, a quick note on my blog silence for the past several days... So sorry for this folks, I was just unable to get it done, but will try to make up for it a bit. And I thank you all for your patience!
