Nesher (which is now called Aquila) is the first decan of Gedi. It shows a wounded eagle. Since ancient times, this constellation has been known to be an eagle. But how do we know it is wounded? This detail is gained from the star names (shown in the image below).
In Scripture and in the sky-picture, the eagle is a symbol of God’s deliverance and protection. For example, the Bible uses this symbol to show God’s mighty power in delivering His people.
Exodus 19:4 “Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles’ (Nesher) wings, and brought you unto Myself.”The sky-picture of the wounded eagle is God’s promise to protect and deliver His people in times of trouble. Nesher is also a warning against expecting a trouble-free Christian experience. God’s people will all come into times of trouble. They may even experience persecution. These things are to be expected, according to the Bible:
John 16:33 “These things I have spoken unto you, that in Me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”As we see in this constellation and in the Scriptures, being a Christian doesn’t come with a promise that the world will be at peace with us. But we are promised His peace within. Even amidst “tribulation”, God spreads His “Eagle-wings” of protection over His children. This is the Heavenly Message of this constellation.
