Many times we overlook our blessings. But, in fact, Yahweh is blessing us all the time - and in many ways that go unnoticed by us. Lest we be tempted to take His blessings for granted I thought it might be of interest to take a look at some of the blessings God has provided us on this planet. In fact Earth, even after the Fall, is a home for humankind that is filled with blessings more than could be listed in a single day. So, let's get a little perspective on our Creator's loving blessings by considering what living conditions are like on some of the other planets... of which these (that I will be talking about in this miniseries) are the worst in known-space:
Venus is often called Earth's "sister planet" because it is very close to Earth in distance from the Sun and in size. Venus is about 95% of Earth's size. Because of its similarity to us in size and distance, many evolutionary scientists actually thought it might be home to life, prior to the 20th century.
But upon closer inspection, as physicist Steve Tufte explains it, Venus has conditions "well-matched to Dante's visions of hell." What makes it worthy of such a description?
Venus has more volcanoes than any other planet in our solar system and much of its surface is covered in lava. Its temperature averages to more than 730 K, which is hot enough to melt lead.
But that's not all... Even if the temperatures of Venus were more hospitable, it still wouldn't be a very good place for human life. The surface pressure on the planet is equivalent to the pressure diving submersible vehicles encounter at more than half a mile underwater. In other words, the pressure on the planet's surface is triple to what has been encountered on the deepest dive ever. Such tremendous pressure would crush most carbon-based life forms - including people!
But the beautiful-to-look-at, planet Venus isn't done... No, in fact, it offers a triple death threat to life-forms which God has placed on Earth. The third of Venus's lethal conditions is its toxic atmosphere. The planet is surrounded by a thick cloud of sulfuric acid. Sulfuric acid is a highly corrosive chemical which is potentially explosive in its concentrated form. If humans come in contact with it, it can cause severe skin burns, blindness, and it can even burn holes in the digestive tract if swallowed.
So, as we consider what the conditions are like on Venus, we find many reasons to thank our loving Creator. We can enjoy the beautiful Venus as it shines in the night sky, all from the safety of our cozy planet. And as we breathe in, we can thank Yahweh for the blessing of our air. And as we experience 97 degrees F, we find ourselves without reason for complaint. And as we walk across our green lawns and enjoy the beautiful flowers, or look at the lofty mountains in the distance, we can rejoice that they aren't seething volcanoes causing the surface of our Earth to remain in a molten lava state.
Wow, Venus! It's a nice place to look at, but I wouldn't want to live there!
