An Overview of July

Upcoming Sky Events for July 2019...

In the month of July, our special star-family will be Dagim (Pisces) and its decans. The month of July has seven must-see sky events, which I will discuss in more detail on the day they occur. But here's a heads-up on what you can expect to see in the month of July:

July 2 - Total Solar Eclipse

At just about sunset on July 2nd, there will be a total solar eclipse, visible across parts of the South Pacific, Chile and Argentina. The placement of this solar eclipse within the heavenly tapestry bears interesting significance, which I will address in this blog on the day of the event.

July 2 - Best Viewing of M22 (Northern Hemisphere)

The globular cluster known as M22 is the size of the full moon and is located about 10,000 light years away from Earth. On July 2, M22 will be in the best place in the sky for viewing, for star-gazers in the Northern Hemisphere. M22 is found in the Qesheth (Sagittarius) constellation. Using binoculars, look low in the southern sky around midnight to see it.

July 3 - New Moon Eve

The first visible crescent of the new moon should appear at sunset. Watch for the crescent moon which will follow the sun going down as it sets. The new moon will not be visible very long following the sunset. The biblical day of the New Moon always follows the New Moon Eve. So the New Moon day, being the fourth New Moon of our current Biblical year, will be July 4th.

July 13 - Close Approach of Jupiter and the Moon

Jupiter (Tsedek in Hebrew) will be only about a finger width away (to the right of) the moon (which is about 2 degrees). the planet will be shining brightly in the Gibbor (the Strong Man wrestling the serpent) constellation, which is now known as Ophiuchus. You will be able to view the planet Jupiter with the naked eye. But if you also use a good pair of binoculars you might even get a view of Jupiter's moons.

July 16-17 - Partial Lunar Eclipse (Eastern Hemisphere)

On the night of July 16 - and into the early morning hours of July 17 (depending on one's viewing location) most of the eastern hemisphere will see the moon turn partly red. This is not a total lunar eclipse event as the moon will not pass completely into Earth's shadow. Thus, only part of the moon will be tinged with the distinctive reddish hue of a "blood moon" event.

July 21 - Cygnids Meteor Shower Peaks

On the night of July 21 the Cygnids Meteor shower will peak. This shower produces meteors throughout July and August, but on this night, you may see up to five meteors per hour.

However, the fact that the moon is in its waning gibbous phase, being just past a full moon, will make it hard to see the meteors.

July 29 - Aquarid Meteor Shower Peaks

The Delta Aquarids Meteor Shower will be visible nightly from July 15th and August 20th. But the peak of the shower will occur on the night of July 29 with as many as 20 meteors per hour. This is 4x as many meteors as the Cygnids shower.
