Going Deeper in Deli

TRAPPIST-1

As you will know by now if you have been following my blog, my featured star-family for the month of June is Deli (Aquarius), the Water Carrier, and its decans.

In today's blog, we're going to dial in our view of Deli as we go a bit deeper to some of the wonders to be found in this beautiful and meaningful constellation. Deli hosts the star known as TRAPPIST-1. TRAPPIST-1 is actually pretty close to Earth, being only 40 light-years from us.

TRAPPIST-1 is small compared to our own sun. In fact, it is only about 8% as large as our sun, and is nearly the same size as our planet Jupiter. In 2017, astronomers announced that TRAPPIST-1 is orbited by at least 7 exoplanets, all of which are similar to Earth in size.

All seven planets discovered in orbit around the red dwarf TRAPPIST-1 could easily fit inside the orbit of Mercury, the innermost planet of our solar system. To give a proportionate comparison to TRAPPIST-1's system and our own solar system, consider the image below:

The 7 exoplanets orbiting TRAPPIST-1 were first discovered using Chile's Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope (TRAPPIST), in 2010. And it is from this telescope acronym that this star has been named.
