Amazing Galaxies: the Sleeping Beauty

Another amazing galaxy is the intense and beautiful "Sleeping Beauty Galaxy", which is also known as the "Black Eye Galaxy" or M64. Both names for this galaxy denote its eye-like appearance.

The Sleeping Beauty galaxy is about 17 million light-years from Earth and is located in the Chemdah (now called Coma or Coma Bernice) constellation, which is a decan of the first star-family.

One unusual thing about this galaxy is that its inner part rotates in one direction while the stars and dust in the outer part of the galaxy rotate in the opposite direction. Hydrogen gas in the middle of the galaxy produces the red colors.

The eye-like appearance of this galaxy, along with the awareness that it contains hundreds of millions of stars and probably numerous exoplanets, brings to mind a beautiful Scripture Promise:

Isaiah 64:4  "For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside Thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for Him."

1 Corinthians 2:9  "But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him."

So the great "eye" of the Sleeping Beauty galaxy visually calls to us, night-after-night, reminding us to look higher, farther, and deeper than what this mortal sphere has to offer. Let's keep our sights upon our Heavenly Calling. For, as this galaxy reminds us, "without a vision, the people perish" (Psalm 29:18).
