The second decan in this star-family is the Northern Cross, or Cygnus, which was anciently known as Ruach. Ruach means “spirit”. Notably, the Holy Spirit, in Hebrew, is Ruach ha Kodesh. This constellation portrays the Holy Spirit in symbol. One Biblical symbol of the Holy Spirit is the dove. We see this, for example, when Yahshua was baptized and the Holy Spirit descended on Him as a Dove (Luke 3:22).
“In pre-Islamic Arabic tradition, Cygnus was... known also as the roc, or rukh... The dove as a Christian symbol of the Holy Spirit... derives from the Hebrew concept of the Spirit or Breath of God (ruach)... In the first chapter of Genesis the Spirit of God (ruach) hovers over the primordial waters moments before God’s Creation of the universe. The dove or pigeon was equated with Cygnus in Arabic tradition.” (Andrew Collins, The Cygnus Mystery,Because of our Saviour’s Sacrifice on the Cross (shown in Ruach’s Cross-like shape), the Holy Spirit is able to be poured out upon the world in great power. The promise of this outpouring is clear in this constellation. But the original shape of Ruach is unclear. The ancients do agree that this constellation is a bird-shape. But whether it was a swan (a bird associated with water) or a dove (as descended upon Christ at His baptism) is unclear.
Ancient Arabian astronomers represented Ruach (Cygnus) as a dove, but the Egyptians and Greeks depicted it as a swan. In this book, Ruach is portrayed as a swan merely because the reference to the Spirit and water is perhaps more strongly supported by the swan, being a water-bird. Additionally, this constellation was said to bear the Cross within it (the Tav). Again the swan form bears the Tav shape within it, as is shown on the following page.
Note: I find it interesting that we are studying the constellation Ruach (the Holy Spirit is called Ruach ha Khodesh in Hebrew) in June at the time when we are spiritually counting the Omer and preparing for Pentecost... Pentecost is the Feast that typically falls in June.
